The BMC has begun deploying AI-powered surveillance cameras equipped with real-time detection systems to combat littering in Mumbai. The technology identifies individuals attempting to dispose of garbage illegally and alerts them through built-in loudspeakers, marking a significant shift in the city's waste management enforcement strategy.
The first such camera has been installed in the Mahim area, one of Mumbai's densely populated neighborhoods. The system is designed to capture the act of littering and immediately broadcast an audio warning to the offender, creating a public deterrent against improper waste disposal.
According to civic officials, the camera uses artificial intelligence algorithms to recognize dumping behavior and distinguish it from regular pedestrian movement. This targeted approach aims to reduce false alarms while ensuring that actual violations are detected and addressed promptly.
The BMC has indicated that successful implementation in Mahim will pave the way for wider deployment across Mumbai's various wards and neighborhoods. The initiative reflects the corporation's growing reliance on technology to address civic challenges, including waste management and urban cleanliness.
The move comes as Indian cities grapple with mounting waste management issues and seek innovative solutions to encourage citizen compliance with environmental regulations. Public shaming through real-time warnings represents an alternative enforcement method to traditional monetary fines and legal action.
