Law enforcement agencies in Mumbai arrested a CPWD engineer and four associates on charges of extortion and bribery involving construction project approvals. The arrested engineer, identified as a 2014-batch Central Engineering Service (CES) officer posted in Mumbai since April 2023, allegedly demanded Rs 50 lakh from a construction company in exchange for expediting necessary clearances.

According to the investigation, the officer sought the substantial bribe from a private developer undertaking apartment construction. The company had approached the CPWD seeking a No Objection Certificate (NOC), a mandatory requirement for such projects. Investigators allege the engineer leveraged his official position to demand payment from the developer seeking regulatory approval.

The arrests come as authorities intensify crackdowns on corruption within government agencies responsible for granting construction permits and clearances. The case highlights persistent challenges in tackling bribery networks that obstruct legitimate development projects and increase costs for private builders and ultimately consumers.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the alleged racket and whether other officials were complicit in the scheme. Officials have indicated further arrests may follow as the probe deepens into the conduct of government personnel involved in construction oversight and approval processes.
