Mumbai food safety inspections reveal sanitation lapses at major establishments

Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officials, led by commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, conducted a comprehensive inspection drive at several food establishments in Mumbai, uncovering significant shortcomings in sanitary practices and regulatory compliance. The inspections revealed inadequate sanitation standards, blocked drainage systems, and improper maintenance of food preparation areas at the inspected locations.

Among the establishments inspected were IRCTC-operated kitchens and the Iskcon temple facility in Juhu, both of which serve large numbers of diners daily. The findings indicate systemic gaps in food safety protocols, including inadequate record-keeping and documentation related to food handling procedures and sourcing.

The crackdown highlights ongoing concerns about food hygiene standards in Mumbai's food service sector, despite existing regulatory frameworks. Officials noted that blocked drains and poor sanitation infrastructure pose direct risks to food safety and public health, particularly in establishments handling meals for thousands of consumers.

The FDA's inspection initiative underscores the need for stricter compliance with food safety regulations across commercial food preparation facilities.
