Mumbai Police have arrested seven individuals accused of assaulting Nadim Nasrudin Sheikh, a 27-year-old member of a competing Mathadi workers' union faction, in a case that highlights ongoing tensions within the port labour organization.
According to Police Inspector Manojkumar Mane, the accused allegedly orchestrated an extortion scheme using the name of their union faction before attacking Sheikh. The attack prompted investigators to file charges under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act, indicating authorities view the incident as part of a broader criminal conspiracy rather than an isolated assault.
The Mathadi union, which represents dock workers at Mumbai's ports, has long been marked by factional disputes over territory and control of lucrative port operations. The distinction between competing factions has previously led to violent confrontations as different groups vie for dominance within the organization.
Police continue manhunt operations for four additional suspects believed to be involved in the incident. Investigations are ongoing to determine the full scope of the alleged extortion racket and the circumstances surrounding the assault on Sheikh.
