The Mumbai Police's special investigation unit has made significant headway in dismantling an illegal telecom data smuggling operation that has been supplying sensitive customer information to unauthorized parties. The arrests, which include two on-duty constables, represent a major breach in data security protocols within the telecommunications sector.
According to investigators, the criminal network has been systematically obtaining and distributing call detail records (CDRs), subscriber detail records (SDRs), and real-time mobile phone location information. These data types are highly sensitive and are typically restricted to authorized government and law enforcement agencies under strict legal frameworks.
The involvement of police personnel in the racket has raised concerns about internal security vulnerabilities within law enforcement agencies. Officials said the two constables allegedly facilitated access to confidential information and helped coordinate the supply chain within the network.
Police have identified a total of nine accused persons connected to the operation, though five have been arrested so far. The investigation is reportedly ongoing as authorities work to identify additional suspects and determine the extent of data that may have been compromised. The case is expected to shed light on the broader vulnerabilities in India's telecommunications security infrastructure.
