Mumbai police conducted a sweep across multiple locations in the city on Saturday, detaining around 400 protesters who had assembled without prior permission. The demonstrations were staged at August Kranti Maidan, Hutatma Chowk, and other venues across the metropolis in solidarity with a political protest being held in the national capital.
Among those detained were actor Imran Khan, Tushar Gandhi—a prominent activist and member of the Hum Bharat Ke Log organisation—and workers from the Communist Party of India (Marxist). At Hutatma Chowk, members of the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi, a political outfit led by Prakash Ambedkar, also staged demonstrations.
At August Kranti Maidan, approximately 200 protesters gathered without authorisation, according to a police official. The force said the process of registering a First Information Report (FIR) against the detained individuals was underway. "Overall, around 400 people were detained from various spots," the official stated.
The detentions occurred as authorities enforced regulations prohibiting public assemblies without prior permission in the city. The nature of the demonstrations and their specific political demands remained unclear from official statements.
