Mumbai Police File Cases Against 500 Over October 2 CJP Protest

Mumbai police have launched a significant crackdown on participants of a Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP) demonstration that took place at Shivaji Park on October 2, with first information reports (FIRs) filed against the event organisers and an estimated 400-500 unidentified supporters and protesters.

The police action comes amid growing concerns over the nature of the gathering and allegations regarding the participation of minors in the event. According to reports, photographs and video footage purportedly showing underage individuals at the protest were subsequently shared across various social media platforms.

In response to these concerns, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has already taken cognizance of complaints related to the alleged involvement of minors and the online dissemination of their images and videos. The commission's intervention reflects growing scrutiny over child protection issues in the context of public demonstrations.

The registration of cases against such a large number of unidentified participants underscores challenges in managing crowd documentation during public gatherings. Authorities have not yet disclosed specific charges levelled against those named in the FIRs, nor provided details on the exact nature of the allegations beyond those pertaining to minors' involvement.
