Mumbai Police impose firecracker ban on public roads until December 4

The Mumbai Police have issued a comprehensive ban on firecrackers and laser lights on public roads across the city, effective immediately until December 4. The order, promulgated under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNSS), represents the law enforcement agency's response to judicial directions aimed at controlling pollution levels during the festive period.

The Bombay High Court's directive specifically targeted the reduction of noise and environmental pollution that typically spikes during festival celebrations. By restricting the use of firecrackers and laser lights on public thoroughfares, authorities aim to protect air quality and maintain noise pollution within permissible limits across the metropolitan area.

The ban applies to all public roads and open spaces within Mumbai's jurisdiction. However, the order does not extend to private premises, where residents may continue to use firecrackers subject to local regulations and residential society norms. The police have urged citizens to comply with the directive to ensure a cleaner and quieter festive season.

The decision aligns with growing efforts across major Indian cities to balance celebratory traditions with environmental and public health concerns. Similar measures have been implemented in other metropolitan areas as courts increasingly recognize the need to address pollution spikes during festival seasons.
