India's financial capital is grappling with a sharp deterioration in air quality, with pollution levels now exceeding those of Delhi. Health experts warn of mounting risks to respiratory and cardiovascular health across the city.

Mumbai's air pollution crisis has intensified, with recent measurements indicating that the coastal metropolis is now experiencing pollution concentrations higher than Delhi, traditionally seen as India's most polluted major city. The shift marks a concerning development for the city's 20 million residents and has prompted health authorities to issue advisories regarding outdoor activities and vulnerable populations.
Air quality indices across Mumbai have fluctuated significantly, with particulate matter and other pollutants reaching levels that exceed safe thresholds established by environmental agencies. The deterioration has been attributed to a combination of vehicular emissions, industrial activity, construction dust, and seasonal weather patterns that trap pollutants in the atmosphere over the densely populated urban area.
Medical professionals have highlighted increased cases of respiratory complaints and cardiovascular strain among patients, particularly among children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions. Pulmonologists recommend limiting outdoor exposure during peak pollution hours, typically early morning and evening, and advise residents to use N95 masks when venturing outside.
To mitigate health risks, residents are urged to monitor daily air quality indices through official channels, maintain indoor air filtration systems, and adopt preventive measures such as regular health check-ups. Authorities have also called for enhanced enforcement of anti-pollution regulations and accelerated implementation of measures to reduce emissions from transport and industrial sectors.
