Mumbai Woman Arrested After Hitting Child While Driving, Phone in Hand

An eight-year-old boy was hit by a car in Mumbai's Bandra neighbourhood on Tuesday afternoon, with police arresting the female driver on charges related to rash and negligent driving. The collision took place opposite Jijamata Garden on John Baptist Road when the child, identified as Ansh Ravindra Gupta, was crossing the street.

According to eyewitness accounts, the driver of the vehicle was engaged in a phone conversation at the time of the incident, and did not notice the child crossing the road. The driver failed to apply brakes in time to avoid the collision, resulting in the child being struck by the automobile.

The injured boy was rushed to a nearby medical facility for treatment. His current condition and extent of injuries have not been disclosed. Police registered a case against the Bandra woman under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code pertaining to rash and negligent acts causing hurt.

The arrest underscores ongoing concerns about distracted driving in urban India, where mobile phone usage while operating vehicles has emerged as a significant traffic safety hazard. Authorities have intensified enforcement against such violations in recent months across major metropolitan areas.
