Mumbai Zoo Set to Acquire Four Asiatic Lions from Gujarat in Animal Exchange Deal

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has confirmed that Byculla Zoo will receive four Asiatic lions from Sakkarbaug in a coordinated inter-zoo exchange programme. The arrangement, already approved by both institutions, represents efforts to maintain genetic diversity and enhance wildlife collections across India's premier zoological facilities.

As part of the bilateral exchange, Mumbai's Byculla Zoo will transfer three pairs of tufted capuchin monkeys to the Gujarat facility. The BMC indicated that both zoos have formally agreed to the terms, paving the way for the translocation of animals in the coming months.

The Asiatic lion, native to India's Gir Forest in Gujarat, remains a conservation priority for Indian zoos. The proposed addition to Byculla Zoo's collection will complement ongoing efforts to educate visitors about India's endangered wildlife and support breeding programmes managed under the Central Zoo Authority's guidelines.

Inter-zoo animal exchanges are a standard practice among accredited institutions to ensure optimal animal welfare, maintain healthy captive populations, and support species conservation initiatives across the country.
