Musk's Starlink slowdown reportedly hampered Ukraine's military operations
Elon Musk ordered a deliberate reduction in Starlink satellite service speeds affecting Ukrainian military communications, according to reports. The restriction reportedly impeded drone operations and air defence systems critical to Ukraine's defence against Russian forces.

Elon Musk, chief executive of SpaceX, allegedly instructed engineers to throttle Starlink service in regions used by Ukraine's armed forces, limiting bandwidth available for military operations. The satellite internet service has become integral to Ukraine's battlefield communications infrastructure since Russia's invasion began in February 2022.
Ukraine has relied heavily on Starlink for coordinating drone strikes, reconnaissance missions, and air defence systems across multiple military units. The service's low latency and wide coverage in conflict zones made it particularly valuable for real-time tactical operations that conventional communications networks could not support reliably.
The reported slowdown coincided with periods when Ukrainian forces were conducting offensive operations, including drone attacks on Russian military assets and personnel. Military analysts have highlighted the vulnerability of depending on a single commercial satellite provider for critical defence communications.
SpaceX and Musk have not formally commented on the allegations. Ukraine's government has previously expressed concerns about Starlink's availability and performance in active conflict zones. The incident underscores broader questions about the role of private technology companies in geopolitical conflicts and the risks associated with military dependence on commercial infrastructure.
