Muslim groups urge DepEd to halt weekend school activities in Zamboanga Sur

PAGADIAN CITY — An advocacy group has petitioned the Department of Education's Zamboanga del Sur Schools Division to cease weekend school activities, citing concerns for Muslim learners and their families.
The Philippines Mobile Da'wah and Charity Association, in a formal letter to Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Ma. Judelyn Ramos, highlighted how weekend scheduling of school events interferes with the religious and personal commitments of Muslim students in the division.
The group's appeal underscores ongoing discussions in the Philippines about balancing academic requirements with the cultural and religious needs of the country's diverse student population. Zamboanga del Sur, located in the predominantly Muslim Bangsamoro region, has a significant population of Islamic faith adherents.
