Myanmar is prepared to facilitate the large-scale repatriation of its nationals, according to statements made during high-level discussions in Putrajaya. The Myanmar government has indicated it will shoulder the costs associated with bringing its citizens back from Malaysia and the broader region.
The development comes as both nations seek to address the issue of undocumented Myanmar nationals residing in Malaysia. Kuala Lumpur has long grappled with managing irregular migration flows from Myanmar, particularly following the 2021 military coup that triggered mass displacement.
The commitment to fund repatriation efforts represents a significant step in bilateral cooperation on migration management. Officials from both countries have emphasised the importance of orderly, voluntary return processes that respect the dignity and rights of those involved.
Malaysia hosts one of the world's largest displaced populations from Myanmar, including ethnic minorities and political refugees. The repatriation initiative is expected to be coordinated through existing diplomatic channels and international organisations working on humanitarian issues in the region.
