The Myanmar leader touched down in Sepang on October 7, marking a significant diplomatic engagement as regional tensions persist over the Rohingya crisis. The visit comes as Malaysia continues to host one of the world's largest Rohingya populations, with over 180,000 registered refugees residing in the country.
Repatriation of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar remains a contentious issue, with humanitarian organisations expressing concerns over conditions in Myanmar's Rakhine State. Malaysia has previously called for safe and voluntary returns, while the international community has raised questions about whether adequate protections exist for returning refugees.
Beyond the refugee question, the visit is expected to cover bilateral trade, investment opportunities, and regional security matters. Both nations share maritime boundaries in the Andaman Sea and have longstanding economic ties, making the diplomatic engagement important for maintaining regional stability.
The visit underscores the delicate balance Malaysia must maintain between its humanitarian obligations and its diplomatic relationships within Southeast Asia. Officials from both countries are scheduled to hold bilateral meetings during the two-day engagement.
