Myanmar pledges safe conditions for Rohingya returning from Malaysia

Myanmar's government has provided assurances regarding the safety of Rohingya people set to be repatriated from Malaysia, responding to mounting international scrutiny of the planned returns.

The undertaking addresses concerns raised by United Nations bodies and global rights groups, who have questioned conditions in Myanmar for returning refugees and internally displaced populations. The repatriation is expected to involve approximately 1,500 Rohingya individuals currently in Malaysia.

UN officials and human rights advocates have previously documented challenges facing returnees in Myanmar, including restricted movement, limited access to basic services, and security concerns in areas affected by the 2017 conflict that displaced hundreds of thousands of Rohingya to neighbouring Bangladesh.
