Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim told Parliament that the recent repatriation of 1,476 people to Myanmar did not include any Rohingya among those returned, according to the bilateral arrangement between the two nations.
Anwar explained that the individuals sent back represented various ethnic communities rather than focusing on a single group. His clarification addressed concerns raised in Parliament about the composition of those repatriated under the agreement.
The statement comes amid ongoing international scrutiny of Myanmar's treatment of the Rohingya minority, who have faced widespread persecution and displacement. Malaysia, which hosts a significant population of Rohingya refugees, has maintained diplomatic engagement with Myanmar on humanitarian matters.
The repatriation programme reflects the continuing discussions between Malaysian and Myanmar authorities regarding the return of undocumented migrants and irregular residents. Officials have indicated that any future movements of populations would be conducted in accordance with bilateral protocols and humanitarian standards.
Parliamentary records suggest the repatriation process remains a subject of legislative oversight, with lawmakers continuing to monitor the implementation of migration and deportation policies affecting regional populations.
