Myanmar to accelerate repatriation of nationals from Malaysia

Min Aung Hlaing arrived in Malaysia on Tuesday for bilateral talks focused on strengthening cooperation between the neighbouring nations, with the repatriation of Myanmar migrants featuring prominently on the agenda. The military commander said Myanmar would work to bring back its nationals from Malaysia "as soon as possible," signalling Naypyidaw's commitment to addressing the issue of undocumented workers and migrants in the country.

The repatriation plan has become a flashpoint for international scrutiny, with human rights organisations expressing concern over the welfare of returning migrants and the conditions they may face upon arrival in Myanmar. Rights groups have warned that inadequate safeguards could expose vulnerable populations to abuse or trafficking risks.

The visit marks Min Aung Hlaing's first trip to Malaysia since the February 2021 military coup that ousted the democratically elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi. Malaysia has maintained pragmatic engagement with Myanmar's military administration despite international condemnation of the coup and subsequent crackdown on dissent.

Both nations share complex migration dynamics, with significant Myanmar populations residing in Malaysia as workers and refugees. Officials from both countries are expected to discuss logistical and administrative frameworks to facilitate the repatriation process while addressing bilateral concerns.
