Mysuru division to assume control of Mangaluru rail operations

The Mysuru division of South Western Railway has initiated the process to assume operational control of the Mangaluru rail region, marking a significant administrative realignment in the southern railway network. The reorganisation is expected to streamline decision-making and potentially facilitate the deployment of additional trains on key routes within the jurisdiction.

Railway officials indicate that consolidating Mangaluru operations under Mysuru division's management could enhance scheduling efficiency and reduce bureaucratic delays in train operations. The shift reflects efforts to optimise resource allocation across the South Western Railway network, particularly for services connecting major ports and commercial centres in coastal Karnataka.

Despite the administrative benefits, railway authorities acknowledge that capacity constraints in the ghat section—the mountainous terrain crossing the Western Ghats—will continue to limit the frequency and scheduling of new services. The challenging topography restricts track capacity and requires careful management of train movements, particularly during monsoon periods when maintenance demands increase.

Railway planners are reportedly exploring engineering solutions to incrementally improve throughput in the constrained sections. Until such infrastructure enhancements materialise, the ghat section will remain a critical bottleneck in expanding train operations between the coastal regions and interior districts, even with improved administrative oversight from Mysuru division.
