Police in Nagpur have arrested a man accused of manufacturing counterfeit currency notes as a means to address mounting financial pressures from unpaid rent. The suspect had rented a room approximately 18 months prior to his arrest, with the rental agreement expiring in January. According to police records, he had ceased making rental payments for several months preceding his apprehension.
Investigators discovered printing equipment and materials used in the counterfeiting operation during a search of the accused's premises. The fake currency seized during the raid comprised Rs 500 denomination notes with an estimated face value of Rs 37 lakh, authorities said.
The case highlights the intersection of economic hardship and criminal activity in urban centres across India. Officials have registered charges against the accused under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code pertaining to counterfeiting currency. The investigation is ongoing to determine whether the counterfeit notes entered circulation or remained undistributed.
Police have urged citizens to report any suspicious currency transactions to local authorities. The Nagpur Police have intensified vigilance at commercial establishments and financial institutions in the region as a precautionary measure.
