The Andhra Pradesh chief minister met with Prime Minister Modi on Thursday to seek Central government support in addressing the drought crisis gripping the state. Naidu underscored the urgent need for financial aid to mitigate the impact of El Niño-induced dry conditions affecting agriculture and water availability across the region.
The meeting highlighted mounting concerns over crop losses and water scarcity in Andhra Pradesh, where El Niño weather patterns have intensified drought conditions. The chief minister appealed for comprehensive Central assistance to help the state implement relief measures and support affected farmers and communities.
El Niño, a natural climate phenomenon characterized by warmer-than-average ocean temperatures, has triggered widespread drought across South Asia, with several Indian states reporting significant agricultural and water management challenges. Andhra Pradesh, heavily dependent on monsoon rains for agriculture, has been particularly vulnerable to the weather disruption.
The appeal comes as state governments across India seek additional resources from New Delhi to manage disaster relief and provide support to drought-affected populations. The outcome of Naidu's discussions with Modi is expected to shape the state's drought response strategy in the coming months.
