Azalina Othman Said has redirected inquiries about the status of Najib Razak's royal pardon application, stating that the legal affairs division under her purview serves only in a secretariat capacity for the pardons board and is not a decision-making member.
The Minister in the Prime Minister's Office distinguished between her office's administrative role and the substantive authority over pardon matters, which falls under Hannah Yeoh's purview as Minister in the Prime Minister's Office (Legal).
Questions regarding any delays or developments in the former prime minister's pardon application should therefore be directed to Yeoh's office, Azalina indicated. The clarification comes amid ongoing public interest in the status of Najib's bid for a royal pardon, following his conviction in the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal.
The distinction underscores the division of responsibilities within the Prime Minister's office structure, with legal affairs handling pardons matters separately from Azalina's portfolio.
