Najib's conditional pardon does not erase court conviction, analysts warn Umno

Experts have stressed the importance of distinguishing between personal sympathy for Najib Razak and the legal finality of his criminal conviction, as the former prime minister's conditional pardon comes into effect.

Analysts said that while public sentiment toward Najib may evolve following his pardon, the court's guilty verdict and sentencing remain legally binding and factually established. They noted that the pardon, which allows for his conditional release, does not overturn or invalidate the judicial findings against him.

Umno, the party Najib led during his tenure as prime minister, has been specifically cautioned about conflating sympathy for the former leader with the party's broader political responsibility during his administration. Political observers emphasised that accountability for government decisions and policies during Najib's premiership remains a distinct matter from any humanitarian considerations regarding his personal circumstances.

The distinction between clemency and exoneration is expected to remain a key point of contention as Umno navigates its political positioning and relationship with its former leader in the coming months.
