Nalco opens pilot facility to extract rare earths from industrial waste
The state-owned aluminium company has commissioned a new plant to recover high-value metals and rare earth elements from industrial residue, marking a significant step towards circular economy practices in India's mining sector.

Nalco has launched a pilot-scale facility designed to extract valuable materials from industrial waste streams, including ferro-titanium alloy, metallic iron, and rare earth elements such as scandium. The initiative represents a collaborative effort involving the National Aluminium Company, the Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology (IMMT), and Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT).
The recovery plant addresses a critical gap in India's supply chain for rare earth elements, materials essential for modern electronics, renewable energy systems, and advanced manufacturing. By processing industrial residue that would otherwise require disposal, the facility aims to reduce environmental impact while unlocking economic value from waste streams.
The pilot operation will serve as a testbed for scaling up production and refining extraction methodologies. Success at this stage could pave the way for broader implementation across Nalco's operations and potentially other industrial facilities in the country.
The project aligns with India's broader push towards self-reliance in critical minerals and sustainable resource management. Rare earth elements have traditionally been sourced from limited global suppliers, making domestic recovery capabilities strategically important for India's industrial development and technological advancement.
