Nanobubble Technology Shows Promise in Fighting Lake Algal Blooms
Chinese researchers have demonstrated significant success using innovative nanobubble technology to combat toxic algal blooms in Taihu Lake, one of Asia's largest freshwater bodies. The pilot programme achieved a 90 percent reduction in harmful cyanobacteria within three weeks of testing.

A novel approach combining cavitation with ozone nanobubbles has emerged as a potential game-changer for controlling hazardous algal growth in contaminated water bodies. During trials across a 3,300-square-metre section of Taihu Lake in eastern China, the technology successfully reduced chlorophyll-a levels—a key indicator of cyanobacterial presence—by 90 percent within 20 days of deployment.
The nanobubble method works by introducing microscopic bubbles infused with ozone into the water, which interact with the cavitation process to break down toxic cyanobacteria. Beyond eliminating the harmful algae, the technology simultaneously increased dissolved oxygen levels in the treated water, improving overall water quality and creating conditions less favourable for future algal blooms.
Taihu Lake, located between Shanghai and Jiangsu Province, has long struggled with eutrophication and algal blooms that threaten both the ecosystem and water supplies for millions of residents. The successful nanobubble trial suggests a scalable solution for large-scale ecological restoration efforts across the region.
While the initial results are encouraging, further testing and monitoring will be necessary to evaluate the long-term effectiveness of the approach and its feasibility for deployment across larger areas of the lake and other contaminated water bodies throughout Asia.
