Medical teams at Narayana Health have documented two significant advances in cellular therapy, marking progress in the treatment of previously intractable conditions. In the first case, a seven-year-old patient with thalassaemia major has achieved transfusion independence following a haplo-cord transplant procedure, which combines stem cells from a partially matched family donor with cord blood cells. The procedure represents an important development for paediatric patients with severe blood disorders who lack fully matched bone marrow donors.
The second breakthrough involves the successful application of dual-target CAR-T cell therapy in a 62-year-old brain cancer patient. The immunotherapy approach, which engineers a patient's own immune cells to recognize and attack cancer cells, demonstrated clinical response in this case of primary brain malignancy. CAR-T cell therapies have shown promise in haematological cancers but remain less established in solid tumours and central nervous system malignancies.
The dual achievements underscore the expanding role of cellular and immunological approaches in Indian oncology and haematology practice. Both procedures require specialized infrastructure and expertise, and their successful deployment at Narayana Health reflects growing technical capacity within the country's private healthcare sector. Medical experts note that while individual cases demonstrate proof-of-concept, larger cohorts and longer follow-up periods are necessary to establish efficacy and safety profiles for broader clinical application.
