NASA Prepares Boeing Starliner for Return to Crewed Missions

The US space agency has begun preparations to reintroduce the Boeing Starliner into crewed mission operations, marking a significant step in restoring the spacecraft to active service. The effort follows recent technical challenges that prompted comprehensive reviews and system modifications across the vehicle.
Under the revised timeline, an uncrewed test flight is planned to occur before December 2026. This mission will focus on validating the performance of newly replaced thrusters and other critical systems that were upgraded following previous concerns. The test flight will serve as a crucial validation checkpoint before human astronauts are cleared to fly aboard the vehicle.
Pending successful completion of the uncrewed test flight, NASA intends to proceed with crewed missions in 2028, when the Starliner will transport astronauts to the International Space Station. The upcoming operational missions represent a key component of NASA's strategy to maintain multiple domestic crew transportation options to the orbital facility.
The mission planning and oversight falls under the direction of NASA's Woody Hoburg, who will lead the initiative to return the Starliner to full operational status. The development marks a continuation of commercial crew program objectives to establish reliable, independent access to low-Earth orbit capabilities.
