Nashik onion wholesale prices drop 16% as southern supplies flood market

Onion wholesale prices at the Lasalgaon agricultural produce market in Maharashtra's Nashik district have fallen sharply, declining 16 per cent to ₹46 per kilogram from ₹55 recorded a month ago. The price correction comes as fresh produce from southern states enters the market, increasing supply and exerting downward pressure on rates at one of India's largest onion trading hubs.

The influx of onions from Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh has been the primary driver of the price softening at Lasalgaon, which typically sets benchmarks for onion costs across India. Southern regions have ramped up harvesting and dispatches following seasonal production cycles, adding substantially to market volumes.

Despite wholesale prices easing considerably, retail rates across Indian markets have remained comparatively elevated, indicating that price benefits have not fully passed through to consumers. This gap between wholesale and retail pricing suggests distribution chains and retail margins continue to cushion any immediate consumer relief.

The Nashik market data provides crucial signals for onion prices nationally, as the region accounts for a significant share of India's onion production and wholesale trading. Market participants are monitoring whether the current supply influx will sustain, potentially widening consumer price relief in the coming weeks.
