National Library Board Opens Hybrid Reading Space at City Square Mall

Singapore's National Library Board (NLB) has unveiled a novel approach to promoting reading and digital literacy through a collaboration with international e-book platform Rakuten Kobo. The partnership brings the "Sit-n-Read Node," a hybrid reading space designed to blend physical books with digital reading experiences, to shoppers at City Square Mall.

The initiative reflects growing efforts by cultural institutions across Asia to adapt library services to evolving consumer habits and shopping patterns. By positioning the reading space within a retail environment, NLB aims to reach audiences who may not traditionally visit library branches while introducing visitors to both print and e-book formats.

The Sit-n-Read Node will operate for six months, from October 19, 2026, to April 11, 2027, providing visitors with access to curated collections and digital reading platforms. The hybrid model allows patrons to sample titles in multiple formats, supporting NLB's broader mission to foster a reading culture throughout the region.

The collaboration represents a broader strategic shift among regional libraries to extend services beyond traditional venues. By partnering with digital platforms and retail spaces, institutions are exploring innovative ways to engage diverse audiences and demonstrate the continued relevance of reading in an increasingly digital landscape.
