The National Service programme is set to begin operations in Sarawak from July 2028, marking an expansion of the mandatory service initiative across the country. Defence Minister Khaled Nordin outlined the recruitment framework for the initial intake, which will comprise 300 participants.
Under the allocation scheme, Sarawakians will fill 60 per cent of available places, securing 180 positions within the cohort. Sabahans are designated 30 per cent of the quota, equivalent to 90 spots, while the remaining 10 per cent will be distributed among youths from the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur.
The tiered distribution reflects the government's approach to ensuring representation from Malaysia's constituent states and territories within the National Service framework. The programme aims to foster national unity and discipline among young Malaysians through structured military-style training and community service components.
Details regarding specific training locations, duration, and participation requirements for the Sarawak intake are expected to be announced in subsequent official communications from the Defence Ministry.
