National University Hospital to eliminate plastic bags at pharmacies
National University Hospital will discontinue providing plastic bags at its pharmacy counters beginning in November as part of sustainability efforts. The institution is urging visitors to bring reusable bags when collecting prescriptions.

National University Hospital (NUH) has announced plans to phase out single-use plastic bags at all its pharmacy outlets from November onwards, marking another step in the institution's environmental sustainability initiatives.
The move will require patients and visitors collecting medications to bring their own reusable shopping bags or containers when visiting the hospital's pharmacy services. The hospital has emphasised that the transition is part of broader efforts to reduce plastic waste and environmental impact across its facilities.
NUH has strongly encouraged the public to adapt to the new arrangement by preparing reusable bags ahead of their pharmacy visits. The hospital is expected to provide advance notice to ensure patients are aware of the change before implementation.
The initiative aligns with Singapore's wider push toward reducing single-use plastics and promoting sustainable consumption patterns across public institutions and healthcare facilities. Similar measures have been adopted by other major hospitals and retailers across the island in recent years.
