Nationwide protests planned against CEC as BJP mobilizes counter-demonstrations

Civil society networks plan to stage coordinated protests across India on October 23 targeting Chief Election Commissioner Gnanesh Kumar over governance of the State Information Register (SIR). The 'People Against SIR' coalition, which includes prominent activist Prakala Prabhaker among other figures, will mount what organizers describe as a nationwide show of dissent against the CEC's stewardship of the controversial initiative.

The demonstrations reflect growing concerns among opposition groups regarding implementation and oversight of the SIR. Organizers have called for broad participation from across the political spectrum and civil society to register their concerns about the electoral commission's direction and policies.

In response, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced its own coordinated campaign, planning nationwide marches and rallies to counter the opposition narrative. The party intends to mobilize supporters across the country to defend the CEC and demonstrate backing for the State Information Register initiative.

The scheduled October 23 demonstrations mark the latest flashpoint in ongoing debates over electoral administration and governance. Both the anti-SIR coalition and the BJP have framed their respective actions as necessary public responses to contested policy questions, setting the stage for significant street-level political mobilization.
