A coastal protection initiative employing natural defence mechanisms has emerged as a viable model for storm resilience, after successfully weathering severe hurricane conditions that damaged conventional infrastructure in the same region.

The living shoreline project, implemented in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, utilised vegetation and natural sand accumulation to stabilise the coastline. When Hurricane Matthew struck the area with wind speeds of approximately 90 miles per hour, the nature-based structures remained largely intact, contrasting sharply with the performance of traditional hardened coastal defences in adjacent areas.

Conventional infrastructure including seawalls and bulkheads in the vicinity sustained significant damage and erosion during the storm event. The differential performance highlighted the structural advantages of natural approaches over engineered barriers in extreme weather conditions.

Coastal engineers and environmental scientists have cited the project's performance as evidence supporting the adoption of living shorelines as a sustainable coastal management strategy. The approach integrates ecological restoration with flood mitigation, offering communities dual benefits of environmental improvement and enhanced storm protection.

The successful outcome has prompted renewed interest in nature-based coastal defence solutions across hurricane-prone regions, with researchers pointing to such projects as templates for future resilience planning in vulnerable coastal communities.
