Emirates has raised concerns about Navi Mumbai airport's readiness to handle international flight operations, pointing to significant shortfalls in essential ground support infrastructure. The airline cited the lack of catering and cargo handling facilities as key impediments to shifting international services to the new airport.
Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), which operates the existing Bombay High Street airport, has provided assurances to international carriers regarding their operations. The operator has committed to retaining international flights at the current Mumbai airport facility through at least the end of March, providing a buffer period as Navi Mumbai airport works to enhance its capabilities.
The development underscores the logistical challenges facing the new airport, which was developed to ease congestion at Mumbai's primary aviation hub. Airlines require comprehensive ground infrastructure including food and beverage preparation facilities, as well as dedicated cargo terminals, to effectively operate international routes.
Navi Mumbai airport has been positioned as a critical expansion of aviation capacity for the western region, but the infrastructure gaps flagged by Emirates suggest that a phased approach to transferring international operations may be necessary. The timeline extension allows the new facility time to complete pending infrastructure development and secure operational certifications for international services.
