The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced Friday that Navanethem "Navi" Pillay, the former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and International Court of Justice judge, is the recipient of this year's Nobel Peace Prize. Committee chairman Jørgen Watne Frydnes acknowledged Pillay's substantial contributions to advancing international law and her sustained commitment to promoting peace globally.

Pillay's career has spanned several decades of high-profile positions in international human rights and justice mechanisms. Her work at the UN and the ICJ has established her as a prominent voice on global humanitarian issues, with her decisions and advocacy influencing international legal frameworks across multiple jurisdictions.

The award comes as renewed scrutiny falls on Pillay's historical involvement in Sri Lankan affairs. Her record on the island nation's human rights concerns and her positions on accountability mechanisms have previously generated significant discussion among policymakers and civil society observers in Sri Lanka.

The Nobel Peace Prize, one of the world's most prestigious international honours, recognises individuals and organisations that have made exceptional contributions to peace and human rights. Pillay's selection reflects the Nobel Committee's assessment of her lifetime dedication to strengthening international legal institutions and advancing human dignity on the global stage.
