The sailor, identified as Pradeep Mukherjee, was taken into custody at INS Agrani, a naval leadership training establishment located in Coimbatore. The arrest came after an investigation revealed that Mukherjee had been compromised through a sophisticated social engineering operation and subsequently coerced into disclosing sensitive defence-related information.
According to law enforcement sources, the suspect allegedly fell victim to a honeytrap orchestrated by handlers working for Pakistani intelligence agencies. The operation involved establishing a relationship with the naval personnel to gain access to classified material relevant to Indian naval operations and capabilities.
The Counter Intelligence cell of the Andhra Pradesh Police launched a detailed investigation following initial leads about unauthorized information sharing through unsecured channels. The probe uncovered the involvement of a Pakistani operative who had maintained contact with Mukherjee over an extended period.
The arrest marks a significant counterintelligence operation by Indian authorities in preventing further compromise of classified naval information. The case has prompted renewed focus on security protocols and personnel vetting procedures at defence installations across the country.
