Navy seizes massive drug haul worth Rs4.2bn off southern coast

Naval personnel apprehended a multi-day fishing vessel engaged in narcotics trafficking during an operation in waters south of Sri Lanka, Navy headquarters confirmed. The intercepted trawler was found to be carrying approximately 189 kilograms and 246 grams of crystal methamphetamine, commonly known as 'ice', alongside heroin consignments stored in 10 sacks. The estimated street value of the seized drug consignment is placed at Rs4.2 billion, making it a significant blow to trafficking networks operating in the region.

Five individuals were taken into custody during the interception. Naval authorities have not disclosed further details regarding the suspects' identities or the intended destination of the narcotic shipment. The operation demonstrates continued enforcement efforts by the Navy to combat drug smuggling activities in Sri Lankan territorial and international waters.

The seizure adds to a growing number of major drug interdictions recorded off the island's coasts in recent months. Authorities attribute such operations to enhanced maritime surveillance and intelligence-led operations targeting known smuggling routes in the Indian Ocean region.
