NBEMS maintains FMGE pass standards, proposes additional exam slot

The National Board of Examination in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has firmly rejected calls to reduce the passing score for the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE), maintaining that current standards ensure quality medical practice. However, the board has proposed introducing a third examination window annually to increase opportunities for candidates.

An expert panel convened to review the examination has recommended several supportive measures short of lowering the pass bar. These include providing candidates access to their recorded responses, upgrading examination centre infrastructure, and undertaking a comprehensive review of the test fee structure. The committee's recommendations seek to address candidate concerns while preserving examination integrity.

The NBEMS has clarified that the June 2026 test will proceed without grace marks or reduced qualifying thresholds. Officials emphasized that maintaining rigorous standards protects public health and ensures foreign medical graduates meet the same competency benchmarks as their Indian counterparts.

The proposed third yearly examination slot represents a significant shift in FMGE scheduling, potentially providing additional testing opportunities for the thousands of Indian medical graduates seeking to establish or expand practice internationally.
