NBI arrests over 80 in Makati crackdown on abusive lending app operations

MANILA — Law enforcement authorities have arrested over 80 suspects in Makati City linked to an illegal lending application accused of using abusive collection methods, the National Bureau of Investigation announced Friday.

According to NBI Director Melvin Matibag, the operators of the online lending platform utilized text-blasting devices to send mass messages to borrowers, part of a systematic collection scheme that violated consumer protection standards.

The operation targeted vulnerable individuals seeking quick loans through mobile applications, with operators employing intimidation tactics and harassment to recover debts. The NBI's investigation revealed the scheme operated across Metro Manila with multiple collection agents coordinating collection efforts through digital channels.

The arrested individuals face charges related to lending violations and harassment under Philippine consumer protection laws. The NBI urged the public to report similar schemes to authorities as investigations continue into the scope of the illegal lending network.
