NBI files disbarment case over alleged honey trap plot against Recto

MANILA — The National Bureau of Investigation has filed a consolidated disbarment case against former Negros Oriental Representative Jacinto "Jing" Paras and four lawyers from the Rondain and Mendiola law firm over their alleged involvement in a "honey trap" scheme targeting Executive Secretary Ralph Recto.

The NBI identified the four lawyers as members of the law firm implicated in the alleged plot. The disbarment petition was filed before the Supreme Court's office of the bar confidant, according to investigators familiar with the matter.

A "honey trap" typically refers to a scheme in which a person is lured into a compromising situation, often through romantic or sexual inducement, for purposes of blackmail, extortion, or manipulation. The investigation into the alleged plot against Recto has been ongoing for several months.

The filing marks an escalation in the case, as disbarment proceedings represent serious disciplinary action within the legal profession. Lawyers found guilty of professional misconduct through the disbarment process face potential loss of their law licenses.

The Supreme Court's office of the bar confidant will now evaluate the charges and determine whether to proceed with formal disciplinary hearings against the respondents.
