MANILA — The National Bureau of Investigation has initiated a nationwide crackdown targeting foreigners who have fraudulently obtained Philippine citizenship documents, NBI Director Melvin Matibag announced Thursday. The investigation focuses on the illegal procurement of birth certificates, passports and related identity papers used to falsely establish Filipino nationality.
Matibag said the probe represents an expansion of earlier NBI concerns regarding illegal activities involving foreign nationals in the country. The director indicated that document fraud has become a growing problem requiring coordinated investigative efforts across multiple jurisdictions.
The initiative comes as authorities intensify scrutiny of foreign nationals' activities in the Philippines, including those connected to Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators and other high-risk sectors. Officials have expressed concern that fraudulent citizenship documentation could facilitate money laundering, tax evasion and other criminal enterprises.
The NBI has not disclosed specific details regarding the scope of the investigation or the number of individuals under scrutiny. Authorities are expected to coordinate with other agencies to identify and prosecute those involved in document falsification schemes.
