NBI prepares arrest of Senator dela Rosa; acknowledges potential armed confrontation

MANILA — The National Bureau of Investigation said Monday it is preparing to arrest Senator Ronald 'Bato' dela Rosa, with NBI Director Melvin Matibag emphasizing efforts to execute the arrest with the least possible violence.

Matibag acknowledged during a media interview that locating and apprehending the senator could result in an armed confrontation, cautioning that such an 'encounter' may occur during the operation. The director cited dela Rosa's prior service as chief of the Philippine National Police as a factor in the bureau's preparedness.

The cautionary statement underscores the sensitive nature of apprehending a high-ranking government official with significant law enforcement credentials and connections throughout the police establishment. The NBI has not disclosed details regarding the charges or specific circumstances prompting the arrest order.

Dela Rosa, who previously led the PNP under the Duterte administration, currently serves as a senator representing the party-list group ACT Teachers.
