NBR freezes accounts of 100 suspects linked to RMG sector unrest

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has directed commercial banks to freeze the accounts of approximately 100 persons believed to be connected with ongoing turmoil in the readymade garment sector, according to official directives issued this week. The order represents a significant enforcement action targeting individuals allegedly linked to the unrest that has affected the country's crucial export industry.

The decision comes as Bangladesh grapples with labour tensions and protests within the RMG sector, which remains a cornerstone of the nation's economy and export earnings. By immobilizing suspect accounts, authorities aim to disrupt financial networks that may be fueling or sustaining the disturbances.

The NBR's action underscores the government's intensified crackdown on individuals allegedly orchestrating or profiting from the sector's disruptions. Financial institutions have been instructed to comply with the freeze orders, preventing fund transfers from and deposits into the identified accounts pending further investigation.

Authorities have not released the complete list of affected individuals, citing ongoing investigations. The measure is expected to remain in force until authorities determine the involvement of each suspect and either clear them or proceed with formal legal action.
