The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has issued landslide early warnings across a number of districts in Sri Lanka, effective from 4.00 p.m. on 29th until 4.00 p.m. on 30th. The alerts classify risk levels by geographic division to enable targeted preparedness responses.
Ratnapura District has been placed under Warning Level 2, designated as "Be Alert" status, indicated by an amber alert classification. This alert category signals elevated risk requiring residents and authorities to monitor conditions closely and prepare contingency measures. Additional divisions across other districts remain under Warning Level 1, classified as "Be Vigilant," the lower of the two alert tiers.
The 24-hour warning window allows local government bodies, emergency services, and residents time to review evacuation procedures, secure vulnerable structures, and prepare relief supplies if necessary. Landslide risks typically intensify during periods of heavy rainfall or geological instability in Sri Lanka's elevated terrain regions.
The NBRO advises communities in alert zones to avoid unnecessary travel through hillside areas and to remain updated on official channels for any developments or escalations in warning levels during the specified period.
