NC government faces crisis as 25 legislators issue 14-day ultimatum

The National Conference government led by Omar Abdullah faces mounting pressure after 25 party legislators submitted a 14-day ultimatum to party leadership on Wednesday. The dissidents have outlined specific demands that threaten the stability of the administration in the Union Territory.

Among their key demands, the legislators have called for the removal of current cabinet ministers and the formation of a new cabinet. The group has also insisted that the party leadership take a more assertive stance on issues related to Articles 370 and 35A—constitutional provisions that previously granted special autonomous status to Jammu and Kashmir before their abrogation in 2019.

The ultimatum marks a significant challenge to the Omar Abdullah-led government, which assumed office following the recent assembly elections in the Union Territory. The dissidents' insistence on revisiting the constitutional articles reflects ongoing tensions within the NC over the party's response to the August 2019 constitutional changes.

Party leadership has not yet publicly responded to the 14-day deadline. The ultimatum signals potential fractures within the National Conference at a critical juncture for the newly formed government, with the party facing pressure to either accommodate the legislators' demands or risk further internal conflict.
