NCDEX launches weather derivatives contract for Northeast monsoon rainfall

The National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange India (NCDEX) has introduced RAINCHENNAI, a weather derivatives contract aimed at enabling stakeholders to hedge against rainfall fluctuations during the Northeast monsoon period. The new instrument represents an expansion of the exchange's weather-based product portfolio, which previously focused on Mumbai-centric rainfall risks through the RAINMUMBAI contract.

Weather derivatives have emerged as important risk management tools for India's agriculture-dependent economy, allowing farmers, agribusinesses, and other stakeholders to protect themselves against adverse weather conditions. The RAINCHENNAI contract will enable participants to enter into financial agreements linked to rainfall measurements, providing a structured mechanism to offset potential losses from rainfall variability during the Northeast monsoon months.

The launch reflects growing recognition of the need for region-specific hedging instruments across India's diverse climatic zones. By extending its weather derivatives platform to Southeast India, NCDEX aims to provide tailored solutions for participants in states affected by the Northeast monsoon, which typically occurs between October and December.
