NCERT launches AI literacy module to teach students deepfake detection

The NCERT has rolled out a comprehensive AI education module designed for classes 9 through 12, equipping students with critical thinking skills to identify manipulated media and understand the ethical dimensions of artificial intelligence technology.

Developed in consultation with IIT Madras and IIT Jodhpur, the activity-based programme spans 20 hours of instruction and goes beyond technical knowledge to address the societal implications of AI-generated content. The module specifically focuses on deepfake detection and the ethical boundaries surrounding synthetic media creation, reflecting growing concerns about misinformation in India's digital landscape.

The initiative aims to build digital literacy among Indian secondary students at a formative stage, enabling them to navigate an increasingly complex information environment. By grounding AI education in practical, hands-on activities rather than theoretical frameworks alone, the curriculum encourages students to engage critically with technology.

The partnership between NCERT and India's premier technical institutions underscores the government's commitment to integrating emerging technologies into mainstream education. As artificial intelligence continues reshaping communications and media consumption patterns, the module positions students to become informed digital citizens capable of distinguishing authentic content from AI-manipulated alternatives.
