The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has begun investigating Meta and its subsidiary Instagram following concerns regarding child safety on the platforms. As India's statutory body mandated to protect children's rights, the NCPCR possesses significant investigative powers under the Commissions of Inquiry Act and related legislation. The commission can summon social media platforms, demand compliance reports, and compel companies to provide information about their safety mechanisms, content moderation policies, and data protection measures.
The investigation seeks to examine whether Meta and Instagram have adequate protections against child exploitation, cyberbullying, and exposure to inappropriate content.
