NCRTC to harness solar power for Delhi-Meerut Namo Bharat corridor

The National Capital Region Transport Corporation has secured a power purchase agreement for a 110-megawatt solar facility that will supply nearly 60 percent of electricity needed to operate the Delhi-Meerut rapid transit corridor. The renewable energy project represents a significant step toward reducing operational costs and carbon emissions on the high-speed rail link.

NCRTC to harness solar power for Delhi-Meerut Namo Bharat corridor

NCRTC has signed a power purchase agreement with a solar power developer to construct a 110-megawatt plant in Jaulan, Uttar Pradesh, according to a statement released Saturday. The facility is expected to become operational within 24 months at an estimated cost of Rs 450 crore and will supply electricity through the Uttar Pradesh state grid to NCRTC substations across both Uttar Pradesh and Delhi.

The solar installation will cater to approximately 60 percent of the Namo Bharat corridor's total electricity demand. Under the agreement, NCRTC will purchase power from the plant at a fixed tariff rate for a 25-year period, providing cost certainty across the concession period and insulating the operator from volatile energy prices.

Electricity constitutes roughly 30 to 35 percent of the corridor's operational expenditure. By securing renewable energy at fixed rates, NCRTC aims to stabilize a major component of running costs while simultaneously reducing reliance on conventionally generated power. The arrangement aligns with broader national objectives to accelerate renewable energy adoption in the transport sector.

The Delhi-Meerut Namo Bharat corridor, a 82-kilometer rapid transit link currently under construction, is expected to significantly enhance connectivity between the national capital and its satellite cities when completed.
