NCTE forms panels to overhaul teacher recruitment eligibility norms

The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) has constituted two specialist committees tasked with revising the recruitment framework and qualification standards governing teacher eligibility examinations across India. The initiative seeks to align certification procedures with evolving educational standards and institutional offerings.

The expert panels will focus on amending norms for both the Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET) and State Teacher Eligibility Tests (STET), according to official orders. A key objective is to facilitate graduates completing NCTE's four-year Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP) to gain direct access to school teaching positions without additional barriers.

The ITEP represents a restructured teacher training model designed to enhance pedagogical preparation and subject expertise. By harmonizing recruitment criteria with this programme's outcomes, the NCTE aims to create a more coherent pathway from teacher education to employment in schools.

The committees are expected to examine existing eligibility benchmarks, qualification prerequisites, and examination formats to identify provisions requiring modernisation. Their recommendations will inform policy adjustments to streamline the teacher recruitment process while maintaining quality standards across India's education system.
